Tea Blog Carnival No. 5

Why do I write about tea?

Tea makes me happy, therefore I write about it.  Funny thing though, I don't blog about other things I like.  I adore bellydancing (I'm even in a show or two come November!), aerial silks rock my world, sociology is my favorite topic (which is why I'm getting a PhD in it), but I don't blog about these topics - I blog about tea.

How the idea for the blog came up was quite sudden, like most of my extracurriculars.  I was sitting at my parent's house in late November, and couldn't stop thinking about blogging for the public.  I've been blogging for myself and close friends since 2002, but never had material that was for public consumption.  All of a sudden I had an idea that I wanted to communicate with people about (tea) and some time to cobble together a website.  I picked Blogger because Google is good at simplicity, and because I don't really like all the mess that comes with hosting your own domain (believe me, I've done it before).

But why tea specifically?  Frankly, it seemed like a topic that enough people would be interested in.  People all over the world drink tea; it's not a phenomenon that's specific to one geographical region.  I like the universality of it, but also the vast variety.  Wherever you go, there you'll (probably) find tea.  Besides, blogging about tea gives me the impetus to keep trying new kinds of tea.  Being a committed tea dilettante is the best kind of dilettante.
