A musical weekend in Amsterdam.

I love Amsterdam! Lately I came to visit my daughter two weekends in a row. The canals look so peaceful at dawn with the ducks swimming quietly and the barges moving slowly. Inspiring!

Last weekend I treated mysleft to a concert at the famous Concertgebouw, which is splendid. The neoclassic shoebox concert house was built in 1881 and houses today one of the finest orchestras in the world. The interior is white and the drapes and seats are in red velvet, very elegant. Quite a contrast with the red and gold main hall of the French Opera Garnier, inaugurated in 1875! I had booked a seat in the podium, that is behind the orchestra, to be able to see the hall as the musicians see it. Entering the concerhall was a beautiful experience!Although I had the feeling at times that there was "too much music" behind the orchestra in the fortes of Ravel's impetuous Valse, and I also felt I lost a bit the nuance of pianos and fortes, I was truly delighted! The program was French music: Debussy, Ravel, Dutilleux...I am going again today, this time to see talented (and handsome) Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini in a Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin program. Quite a regal I expect! (photo of Pollini's piano added later)
