Of foie gras and cheeseburgers

The French are quick to blame "les Américains" for the incursion of fast food into their eating habits, but who is really at fault?

I was at my daughters' junior high school a few days before the Christmas break, and I noticed the cafeteria menu posted on the bulletin board. I decided to take a look, especially to see what delicacies were featured for the Christmas meal. And there it was: foie gras, cheeseburgers, frites.

I had to shake my head and look again -- perhaps this wasn't the real repas de Noël? No, everything was clear: foie gras, cheeseburgers, frites.

At least they weren't going to concoct a foie gras burger!

The meal was a flop, and my daughters told me the cooks had said they would "never do that again." Lessons were learned. But as far as I know, no dark American force of gastronomic evil had compelled the cooks to create such a menu.
