Burgandy wines in a California private wine cellar

I couldn't believe my eyes when I was invited to visit the wine cellar of one of my friend's friend in the Bay Area: an impressive collection of Burgogne wines, among California wines.
Typically, Bordeaux wines are better known abroad and Bourgogne wines are an almost confidential wine production, known abroad mostly by connaisseurs, and more difficult to identify because the "terroirs" where the wine is produced are very, very small in size, sometimes a few acres.
So if I may, after checking with Peter and Francoise http://aworldinapan.blogspot.com/2007/10/another-treat-saint-julien-1984.html , you should drink those 1993 bottles now. Your Mercuray is a Côte Chalonnais, which means this wine is a bit lighter than the Bourgognes. Bourgognes are classified in Cotes de Beaune and Cotes de Nuit, and somhow it is said that Cotes de Beaune is more feminine, more elegant, and Cotes de Nuit more masculine, more body; different characters. Both your Gevrey Chambertin La Combe aux Moines, which is a 1er Cru Côte, and the Clos Vougeot, which is a Grand Cru , are des Côtes de Nuit.
So David and Kathy, enjoy your wines et "A la votre"!
