We arrived in Provence last night. The High Speed Train (TGV) made us leave quickly behind the Parisian gray sky and freezing temperatures ...Once we arrived, we were given by our friends Jean-Pierre and Michele, a beautiful Chinese inspired en-suite-bedroom in their Sanary beautiful house. This morning when opening the windows we discovered the bluest sky framing the bluest sea (La Grande Bleue as the Mediterranean is called).
We went to the port of Sanary and found the (usual) stand of sea urchins. Can you believe? 5 Euros a dozen ... +1 Euros if you want them open - which you better do unless you're an expert! Here sea urchins are caught in the sea near the shore, at 30 ft down. They are caught without bottles. Oxygen bottles are not allowed in oreder to protect the environment. In 5 hours, our seller gets about 100 dozen urchins .. imagine how many he'd get if he were allowed to use oxygen bottles! By Noon, they are all sold.
We bought 4 dozens and asked him to open them. Following his advice, we went to the cafe/restaurant by the port and asked if we could come and eat them there. They gave us a tray to hold them. 15 minutes later, and at Noon:15 they were ready to go.
We ordered a bottle of a delicious rose wine and were given little spoons to spooon off the delicacy offered in every urchin! I think a dozen may have a only few grams of this strong sea tasting treasure ... miam!
